Former banking commissioner returns to Poyner Spruill

Former N.C. banking commissioner Joseph Smith is returning to law firm Poyner Spruill to advise banks and financial institutions, the law firm announced.

Smith was named the monitor of the $25 billion settlement between states and five big banks earlier this month. His duties enforcing the settlement will be concurrent with his work at the law firm, where he will be "of counsel."

Smith had served as banking commissioner for almost 10 years. Prior to that, he had been a partner at the statewide law firm for several years.
